Word Is Bond

“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11 ESV

At one point in life, I wanted to be a meteorologist. In fact, part of the reason why I selected my undergraduate school was because they offered a degree in meteorology even though I ultimately did not pursue it. Anything related to weather interests me and this passage comparing the water cycle to the fulfillment of God’s Word caught my attention.

In these verses, God is speaking to the nation of Israel through the Prophet Isaiah to reveal information about His character. Many of us are familiar with the way rain and snow work on earth. They fall from the sky providing much needed moisture to the earth producing vegetation and crops. Snow and rain fulfill their purpose before evaporating back to the sky. God is telling us that similarly when He speaks a Word, whatever He spoke will fulfill its purpose and come to pass. God’s Word will do the thing He said it would do, making it a success. God's Word is bond. That’s a shouting moment right there!

His Word is bond: like when He told Joseph via dreams that he would rule and his family would bow before him. God’s word succeeded in doing what He said. (Genesis 37-50)

His Word is bond: just as God told Hannah through the Prophet Eli that she would bear a son after years of trying and waiting. God fulfilled what He said. (1 Samuel 1-2:21)

His Word is bond: like the time when the angel told Zechariah that he and his wife Elizabeth would have a child in their old age and because of Zechariah’s disbelief he would not be able to speak again until the child was born. God’s Word accomplished its purpose. (Luke 1)

His Word is bond: just as His Word records that if we think on Jesus and good things, we’ll have the peace of God. Try it and you can confirm that God’s Word is true. (Phil 4:8-9)

Because God cannot lie (Number 23:19), when He says something, it is a promise that is guaranteed. I don’t know what the Lord has revealed to you. Perhaps it’s the promise of marriage, motherhood, reconciliation and restoration, healing, employment opportunities, wisdom, or something else. Just know that no matter how long it takes, whatever God said will be because His Word is bond.

Reflection

What has God revealed to me would happen in my life? Have I lost faith in the waiting period? How can I remind myself that God is faithful and true?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for revealing Your Word to me. Forgive me for losing hope while I wait. Help me to take You at Your Word and believe that You will accomplish all that You say. Thank you for the reminder of your faithfulness. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
