Sustaining Storms

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10 NIV

I love the rain. I enjoy walking or running in the rain. I appreciate the sound of rain falling and tapping my window pane, my car, or the street. For me, there is something incredibly soothing about rain.

I don’t feel that way about the stormy moments, days, or seasons in life. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, being over-committed with lots of sleepless nights, experiencing disappointment in life occurrences, my attitude isn’t to embrace the situation, but rather a desire to say “Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day.” hoping later never comes.

We all have moments when we are weary, burdened with life, and feel overwhelmed. There’s hope in these moments because God is our strength and support. No matter what may come He never leaves us or forsakes us (Deuteronomy 31:6, Hebrews 13:5-6). We can be both encouraged in those moments and express our pain to the Lord. Our Heavenly Father is sure to hear us and act on our behalf.

The next time you find yourself in the rains of life, do not be overcome. Go to God in prayer and tell Him all about your situation. Renew your strength by spending time in His Presence through prayer, praise and worship, quiet reflection/meditation, or reading the Bible. Allow Him to renew you and be your supernatural support and strength in the storm.

Reflection

How can I press into God when the storms of life arrive? What situation do I need to give to God and release in prayer? Are there encouraging Scriptures, or praise and worship songs that I can leverage in these times?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for always being present. Forgive me for trying to weather the storms of life on my own. Help me to depend on Your strength and allow you to support and strengthen me. Grant me the ability to be unafraid in prayer and commune with you honestly. Thank you for seeing me through every challenging situation. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
