“Then the Lord answered me and said: ‘Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it…’” Habakkuk 2:2 NKJV
Welcome to 2019! With the New Year, we often try to make New Year’s resolutions and find new ways to improve our lives. Whether the goals focus on fitness, finances, finessing certain personality traits, finding ways to go deeper with God, the new year often brings a chance for self-improvement.
Sadly, studies show that most New Year’s resolutions are defunct by February. That’s not inspiring! In Habakkuk, we receive insight into one way to help ensure we achieve our vision for the new year: write it down. It’s just that simple.
Writing down the vision for your life helps to actualize the plan. Whether it’s a vision board or a goal sheet with benchmarks of time to monitor progress, seeing the vision helps to make it plain. Take some time to pray about what God has in store for you in 2019 and the desires of your own heart.
No matter what you’re aiming to achieve in this year, remember to keep God at the center. In addition to not making our visions plain, trying to do things in our own strength will certainly hold us back too. Whatever goal you set for yourself, consider praying about it regularly, reading God’s word to gain insight, or fasting in some way. These spiritual disciplines can help you ensure that you’re realizing your vision God’s way.
Reflection
What goals do you have for yourself in this new year? How can you create a visual representation of goals? What spiritual disciplines can you increase in 2019 to achieve your goals? How will you confirm that your goals are God’s goals for your life?
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for bringing me into the new year! Forgive me for not seeking you as I lay out my priorities for the year. Show me what you would have me to do this year. Grant me insight into how to accomplish life goals Your way. Teach me how to make the vision plain and act on it according to Your will. In Jesus’ name, amen.
