Firm Foundation

“‘Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.’” Matthew 7:24 NIV

Growing up, my elementary school hosted a “Field Day” every year. It was the highlight of the year: great weather, being outdoors, playing games, blowing bubbles, and just running around. Any eight-year old’s dream! Tug-o-war was often a game that we played. In my early years of tug-o-war, I thought my upper body strength mattered in combating the force of my opponents. As time went on, I realized my foundation and what rooted me is what really mattered.

The same is true for our lives. Storms will come and go. It’s often been said that we are “either coming out of a storm, or heading into a storm.” In this verse, Jesus is reminding us that our foundation is the securest thing we can have when the winds of life blow. He goes on to specifically lay out the different outcome for each house depending on its foundation, “The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.” (Matthew 7:25-27 NIV) As believers, the Word of God is our foundation.

The Psalmist said, “Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.” (Psalm 119:89 NIV) Amidst this pandemic and all the storms of life affiliated with it: unemployment, food security, housing, grief, social distancing, mental health and wellness, among others, we can turn to the Word of God. While it’s tempting to be filled with the media to stay up-to-date on what’s happening, our foundation in God’s Word is what will sustain our peace in this stormy season. Perhaps for every ten minutes of watching news, you spend twenty minutes in the Bible. Or maybe for every fifteen minutes of reading an article, you spend thirty minutes in praise and worship. Let God’s Word be the firm foundation that roots you and grounds you so the force of your opponents doesn’t knock you down.

Reflection

What storms are blowing in my life right now? Do I have a firm foundation in God’s Word? Why or why not? How can I strengthen my foundation?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for Your Word. Forgive me for neglecting this firm foundation. Help me to prioritize spending time with You like never before in this season. Allow me to not just hear, but also obey Your commands. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
