Fear Not

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1 ESV

Fear is a powerful emotion that can drive us to action or inaction. Whether it is fear of change, fear of success, fear of failure, fear of commitment, etc., our fears can motivate us in powerful ways that prevent us from being all that God wants us to be.

When David wrote this Psalm, he was fleeing from King Saul trying to stay alive. During this time of flight, David and his men faced many obstacles including lack of shelter, hunger, and enemy attacks. There was enough happening in David’s life to be fearful, yet David recognized his relationship with God and the Lord’s promises as a result. This faith in God and perseverance allowed David to brave his time in exile and ultimately become the King of Israel according to God’s plan.

Similarly, we too, must understand that there is nothing to fear with God on our side. Maybe you need to go back to school but you fear the timing isn’t right given career or family. Perhaps, there’s a book you’re supposed to write or an organization that you’re supposed to start but you fear you won’t be successful. It could be that there’s a professional shift you should pursue but you fear doing so because it may make life less comfortable and glamorous.

Whatever fear might be gripping you and paralyzing you to act, surrender it to the Lord. Trust Him to walk with you and see you through whatever situation or life choices you may be facing. Because the Lord is our strength and helps us, we need not fear! (Psalm 28:7)

Reflection

What am I fearful of? How can I trust God in the situation? What can I do to remind myself of God’s promises?

Prayer

Lord, thank you for being the stronghold of my life. Forgive me for being fearful and allowing fear to control my actions. Help me to believe that You are always with me and I that I don’t need to be afraid in this life. Allow me to overcome my fears so that I can experience all that You have for me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
