Excellence is Worship

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.” Col 3:23-24 NKJV

Remember the lyrics from that classic Anita Baker song? — “I’m giving you the best that I got…”  That’s worship. When most of us think of worship, our favorite praise song may come to mind or we may envision ourselves within the church walls showing our Lord adoration and devotion. Worship, however, can happen any time and any place – in all that we do.

When we give God our best, we are worshiping Him. When we display acts and speech that are loving, forgiving, encouraging, humbling, gracious, kind, and patient, we are worshiping Christ as living witnesses to His Word. Even on the job or whatever tasks may come across our to-do-list, if we are working with excellence as service to God and not just thinking about the service to our boss or clientele, we are worshiping God.

God requires His best from us in whatever we do. He is so gracious and loving that He does not expect us to do our best on our own, but He sends His Spirit to empower us and to depend on Him to execute all tasks.

The next time you may think about only giving half the effort because you don’t get paid your worth, or the next time you think about not forgiving someone because they wronged you, or whenever you think that the recipient in your life doesn’t deserve your best, just remember that giving your best in all that you do is an expression of worship to the Lord and service for Christ.

Reflection

Am I giving my best to God daily? Why or why not? Do I depend on Him to supply me with what I need to be successful? Or do I try to accomplish tasks based on my own strength, wisdom, and intellect? How can I get myself to a point of surrender and taking God at His Word with no “ifs,” “ands,” or “buts?” How can I maintain my state of surrender in all circumstances and activities?

Prayer

Lord, today I will quit calling the shots and surrender complete control to You. Father, today I completely surrender to the control of your Spirit in my life. Help me to be meek and depend on Your strength. Show me how to worship You in all that I do. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
